Farm shop finds new owners

A LAST-MINUTE buyer has saved the award-winning Britford Farm Shop from closure.

Owners Giles and Gale Gould had begun a closing-down sale after trying in vain to find a new owner for the business.

They had even sold most of the fixtures and fittings when the offer was made.

Now it will close for refurbishment on January 16 and reopen on January 29.

Mr and Mrs Gould, who had taken the decision to close with great sadness, were thrilled.

“It’s such good news,” said Mrs Gould. “What an amazing start to the year. We are going to be their best customers.”

The shop, based on the Gould family farm just outside Salisbury, has provided a showcase for small-scale local producers of food and drink.

During five years of trading it has won two gold and three silver awards in the Taste of the West Awards.

Mrs Gould said: “We’ve made some really good friends and met some amazing people but the truth is that working seven days a week was beginning to take its toll.

“As well as the farm shop we have other employment commitments and businesses on the farm, such as the livery stables and holiday cottages.

“Our customers were very understanding of our decision and we are tremendously grateful to them for their support over the last five years.”

New owners poised to take farm shop into new decade!

The Britford Farm Shop has found new owners to take the business forward into the new decade.

Many shop customers will recognise Aileen Frizzell, who has been employed at the farm shop since it opened in 2005. She and husband Barry have plenty of retail and catering experience and are looking forward to the challenge of running the farm shop.

The farm shop will closed on Saturday 16th January for some refurbishment and will re-open for business on Friday 29th January.

Closure of farm shop announced

After five years of business Giles and I have decided to close the farm shop to persue other projects.
When we first opened the shop we knew nothing about retail but we had a passion for good quality local food and wanted to support British farming. In the past five years our knowledge and experience has grown, enabling us to become owners of an award winning business that we are very proud of. We've met some incredible people - customers and suppliers who share our belief in the importance of locally grown/produced food and drink.
However, we have also been working seven days-a-week for the past five years and it is the time commitment that has been the deciding factor in our decision to close the shop.
We would like to thank all those who have supported us over the past five years, particularly our regular customer and favoured suppliers. The decision to close the shop has been a very difficut one as it has been a huge part of our lives for so long. We are certainly going to miss the social aspect of the shop but hopefully we'll see many of you again soon.
Kindest thanks,

Gale Gould

Christmas meat orders!!

Orders are now being taken for Christmas meat - turkey, goose, duck and ham.

The free range turkeys are, once again, being supplied by W J Chilcott of Overmoigne, Dorchester, Dorset. Chilcott turkeys are reared under the FTFA Golden Promise Quality Assurance scheme. The birds are free ranged, grown slowly to full maturity and fed on high quality natural feeds.

The hams, as usual, are supplied by Denhay and are pre-prepared in West Country Bramley Apple juice, West Country honey, curing salts and local herbs so there is no need to soak overnight to reduce the salt. The hams are available in 2-6kg weights, and either smoked or unsmoked.

Turkeys and Denhay hams are ordered on a first come, first served basis. Please let us know your choice at your earliest convenience.

Also, please let us know by Monday 14th December of any additional meat orders, such as sausages, mince, chipolatas, or beef joints etc, that you require so that we can reserve it for you.
Turkeys, hams and Christmas meat orders will be ready to collect on Wednesday 23rd December after 1.00pm.

Farewell to another independant!

Sad news reached us yesterday. The East Harnham Deli has closed - with no warning. A visit to their website could not elicit any information about why this decision has been taken but I know that with a loyal following it must have been a hard one.
My immediate reaction is to wonder if the 'local food' bubble has burst, when yet another independant that has served a community and championed local food leaves the market place. Then I wonder if there was something that we could have done - a joint-promotion, combined advertising, sharing deliveries to reduce costs - that may have made a difference but now it's too late.
Why should it matter to us? After all we are competition. Yet, we independants must stick together! Our strength is in our numbers. The more independant shops there are in our communities the more that customers will feel familiar with them and support them.
Independant food stores support small producers - chutney makers, artisan cheese makers, honey producers, small holders, etc. It is the smaller producers who often keep the skills and crafts of the countryside alive and it is through small independant shops that they find a route to market.
Perhaps the decision for the East Harnham Deli was a personal one. However, the loss of this community hub will be mourned by customers, suppliers and competitors alike!
