Planning Application: update!

Those of you who have been following this saga will be interested to learn that today we have received notification that the Planning Department (formerly Salisbury District Council but is now Wiltshire Council) have received our application for advertising consent!

Good news. Particularly as the recent submission was rejected because it was on the wrong form and because the drawing of the new signs did not have the dimensions written on them. No matter. It's in the machine now waiting to be processed.

We must express huge thanks to those of you who have written, emailed, Facebooked and phoned with your messages of support and comments on the new design for the signs.

As soon as we have a date for the Planning Committee to meet and consider our application would you like to know?...we'd love you to come along!

Planning Application - can you help?

Many of our regular customers will know that we are currently working towards gaining planning permission for new signage on our land, adjacent to the A338, advertising the farm shop. With that in mind, are you able to send comments regarding our new design that we can take with us to the Planning Department to support our application?

The signs are made of diabond (recycled aluminium and plastic laminate), measuring 1200mm x 600mm, and are green with white writing.

Please email us at: mail@britfordfarmshop.co.uk.

Quick update re: planning permission

Our proposal for the new signage is currently being reviewed by Wiltshire County Council Highways Department. They will comment on whether they believe our new designs constitute a risk to road safety and will advise the planners at Salisbury District Council of their opinion.
It is hoped that because there were no objections from WCC regarding the existing signs, the new smaller designs will be approved.
I will keep you informed.

Planning Apllication update.

Thank you so much to those of you who have emailed, blogged, phoned, written and personally offered your support to us - it is very much appreciated. Really.

We recently met with Salisbury District Council Planning Department to discuss a way forward with our advertising planning consent and have been asked to submit new designs for consideration.

The lovely people at Signs in Motion will come up with something that I hope will be acceptable to the Planning Authority!

Watch this space - as you will certainly be invited to endorse the new designs when they become available. Or you could come with us to the committee when they sit to discuss our application?

Fancy coming to see local... err umm....'democracy' at work?

Loss of signs means loss of business!

Giles and Gale Gould, owners of the award winning Britford Farm Shop, have lost a planning appeal that they feel could now jeopardise their business.

The appeal was made to the Secretary of State after Salisbury District Council denied planning permission to retain advertising signs that the local authority say detracts from the visual amenity of the area.

Giles said ‘the signs were professionally produced and have been on our land near the A338 for nearly four years. We rely on them to attract passing trade. This decision has come as a real blow for us. Without signs advertising our existence we will not be able to carry on in business. From the Dairy Crest unit on Downton Rd, to Britford School there are over twenty road signs. This is a distance of 500 yards, yet these are not the subject of any investigation'.

The Inspector to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government reported that ‘I recognise the part that outdoor advertising can play in encouraging small businesses and attracting trade, but the regulations require that decisions are made only in the interests of public amenity and public safety. Therefore it is these factors, rather than commercial need and advantage that has been decisive in my consideration for this appeal.’

However, Wiltshire County Council Highways Department, at an earlier hearing, made no objections to the signs on safety grounds. Britford Parish Council also had no objections to the signs.

Gale said 'we were unfortunate enough to suffer repeated vandalism to our signs in a campaign that lasted at least two years. Finally an arrest was made and the culprit was revealed to be a neighbours teenage son. By this stage we had been forced to replace the signs several times over - at great expense - and had eventually resorted to having the signs reinforced and made with metal posts concreted in at the base. Shortly after the arrest was made a complaint was recieved by Salisbury District Council about the existence of our signs. '

The owners of the farm shop are hoping that a meeting with the Planning Department at Salisbury District Council will enable a compromise to be reached that will enable the Britford Farm Shop to retain some form of advertising on the farms land.
